Westhampton Residence

Westhampton Residence : 'The Framingham' : New York : 1985

"...the ranch house transformed" is how Paul Goldberger, the New York Times architecture critic, described this project.

Instead of fighting the original architecture, this addition and renovation of a 1960 tract house celebrates the new by wrapping it around the old. The addition contains an outdoor deck that is ambiguous in that it is both within the building and outside it. This ambiguity is reinforced by the use of the exterior materials on the inside surfaces. The intent of these inversions is to comment on the original architecture without mocking it.

Selected as an
Architectural Record House in 1985, the house was extensively published and praised for its economy, humor, and insight.
