Sugi bench

The
Sugi bench explores the application of solid, laminated, and bent cedar in a design inspired by the traditional ovoid forms and fabrication techniques of magewappa boxes.

In a dialog between stasis and equilibrium, the bench gently rocks from side to side, engaging the user by promoting positive emotional interaction.

Proposed in naturally grown Akita and/or Jindai cedar, the design adheres to sustainable wood manufacturing practices, including the use of 100% regionally sourced wood products.

Expressing the structural and visual rotation of the design elements, multiple laminated leg spokes radiate from the bench seat, each tenoned and rabbeted to the perimeter of the ovoid form of the seat and bentwood floor rail. This interplay evokes a craft tradition intrinsic to fine woodworking.

All wood components are finished in odor-free, water-based, zero-VOC coatings.

By exploring a variety of wood processes, the
Sugi bench embodies the spirit of the IFDA competition to encourage innovative and unique approaches to wood manufacturing that merge tradition with modern efficiency.
